How a session runs
Five stages, and the order is the point.
Cognometrist is the lab’s method with one domain substituted in: elicit evidence, infer the person’s state, act on it, check that it held. Each stage only makes sense once the one before it has run — you cannot sequence a subject you have not mapped, and you cannot teach a person you have not measured.

Building a tool that makes people more capable rather than more dependent is not a matter of tone. It rules things out. These three constraints cost us features, and each one is visible in the software.

Retrieval
Grounded, or it doesn’t ship.
Every lesson cites the passage of your own material it was drawn from, and the citation opens. A tutor that is fluently wrong is worse than no tutor at all — and fluency is precisely what these models are best at. Retrieval against your sources, rather than recall from training, is not a feature we added. It is the reason the thing can be trusted.

Assessment
Measured before taught.
We examine first. A curriculum built on an assumption about what you already know wastes your time at one end and loses you at the other. Teaching should begin at the exact point your understanding stops, and finding that point is real work — not a preference slider labelled beginner, intermediate, advanced.

Scheduling
Retained, or it didn’t count.
A concept you understood in April and cannot use in June was never learned; it was rented. Scheduling review before the forgetting curve takes it back is unglamorous, invisible in a demo, and most of the actual result. We would rather be judged on what a person still knows next term.
The guarantee
A gap has nowhere to hide.
Cognometrist will not teach a concept whose prerequisites are unproven. If you later slip on something you had mastered, it takes the mastery back and teaches the concept again. Nothing is marked complete on the strength of a single good day.
